2018 AUSKF Iaido Successes and 2019 Changes

January 20, 2019

Hello Regional Federation Presidents,

Please share this email with your members.

I hope 2018 ended in a good note for you and your members. And, I hope the start of 2019 is going well!

I would like to share some successes we had last year, and some changes for 2019.

The 2018 AUSKF Iaido Summer Camp and Jodo Seminar was held in Salt Lake City, UT. We had 99 participants for the Iaido camp, 82 Iaidoka participated in the taikai, 46 Iaidoka participated in the shinsa, 44 participants for the Jodo seminar, and 29 Jodoka participated in the shinsa. We also had two FIK members from Mexico join our events. We were able to stay under budget, and use some of the left over budget to provide a Sensei via the AUSKF Instructor Program for a growing dojo in MWKF.

Another great success we had was the support of the AUSKF Iaido Team to participate in 2018 Pan-American Iaido Goodwill Taikai in Toronto, Canada. We were able to send six members in which three represented Team USA and the others took part in Goodwill teams. The participants for Team USA were Thane Mittelstaedt (PNKF), John Mullin (AEUSKF), Paul Shin (GNEUSKF), and for the Goodwill teams: Jennifer Mayo (RMKIF), Gordon Hall (AEUSKF), and Edward Vierk (SWKIF). Team USA took first place in the Pan-Am Taikai, and those who participated in the Goodwill teams represented the quality of Iaido in the USA. I also would like to thank Mazkiya, USA, for supporting us by providing the team members with their zekken/nafuda.

In 2019, our first event will be the 2019 AUSKF Iaido Summer Camp and Jodo Seminar in McMinnville, OR, June 27 – July 1, 2019. We will hold an Iaido shinsa for those wanting to test up to 6-dan. This year we will follow the 2018 Iaido examination guidelines provided by FIK. This was approved at the 2018 November AUSKF board meeting. The new guidelines are as followed:

  • 3-dan and below – 5 Seitei Iai katas in 6 minutes
  • 4-dan and 5-dan – 1 koryu kata and 4 Seitei Iai katas in 6 minutes
  • 6-dan – 2 koryu katas and 4 Seitei Iai katas in 7 minutes
  • written exam requirement will remain the same for 1 kyu and above

We will add an addition bracket to the AUSKF iaido taikai. We will have the following brackets this year: 2-kyu and below, 1-kyu to 1-dan, 2-dan to 3-dan, 4-dan ot 5-dan and 6-dan. It will also be a requirement starting this year that all those participating in the AUSKF Iaido taikai wear a zekken/nafuda with the name of their federation, instead of their dojo.

I would like to thank the board members, you and your members, for making my first year as the AUSKF Iaido Committee Chairperson a success, and look forward to working with you in 2019! If you have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Monica Iwakabe
AUSKF Iaido Committee Chairperson

High rank (6-8 Dan) and Shogo testing in Japan. 2019 Calendar

January 6, 2019

Dear all,
For those interested in testing in Japan for high rank (6, 7, and 8 dan in Kendo, Iaido, Jodo) and Shogo (Renshi, Kyoshi), please see the attached calendar of events I just obtained from AJKF.

Please pay particular attention to the AJKF deadline for application. I need to receive all applications and payments ($100 payable to AUSKF as processing fee to test outside USA) 14 days before their deadline.

For those interested in kendo 8 dan test in Kyoto (May 1, or 2), their deadline is February 12, which means I need to receive all documents by January 30.

Please use the form on our website. http://auskf.org/docs/2018/ForeignPromotionRequest.htm

Those testing for up to 5 dan in Japan, they are conducted by regional federations, and I will NOT be submitting application to them. Each applicant is responsible for finding out the schedule, location, date, application forms, submitting the application, fees, etc. They will still need to submit application to me using AUSKF forms and $100 processing fee to receive approval letter from AUSKF.

If anyone is applying using the new online application system with the link above, please also send me an email notice to me that they applied for testing in Japan for certain rank in which category (Kendo, Iaido, Jodo). Please remember to attach your current certificate (Menjo) also. I will do my best to help you out, but good, timely, and clear communication is the key to help each other.

Thank you,
Michio Kajitani
